The Lonely Scavenger
Canada
Приєднався 19 сер 2007
Welcome to my channel! Iam currently building an Off-Grid Cabin deep in the woods. Every visit I continue to improve the cabin using things that are being thrown away. In fact almost the entire cabin is built from scraps. Follow me on my adventures at the cabin. Overnighters, Extreme Cold, Heavy Snowfall and Rustic Cuisine.
Crafting Custom Round Jaw Blacksmith Tongs
I finally finish a pair of tongs I started over four years ago. Many different types of tongs are needed for a variety of items to hold. These ones are more specific for picking up rebar. It was a struggle but I managed to get them done. They didn't fit in my forge properly because of their shape and I had trouble getting the steel hot enough.

No Dig Raspberry And Rhubarb Patch
Переглядів 103День тому
I make a no Dig garden using cardboard to first cover the grass and kill it. I found some rocks to make a country style border and used black garbage bags to make a trail. The garbage bags will suppress the grass underneath and I covered them with gravel, wood ash and saw dust to make a trail. I then transplanted the raspberries and cut the cardboard to surround the stem while still suppressing...

Surviving -35c In A Mobile Hot Tent
Переглядів 1932 дні тому
I went to check on my second camp to get my four foot crosscut saw to bring back to the cabin. It was very cold at minus thirty five Celsius not including the windchill. I set up this mobile Camp so it could be moved by sled easily. It consists of Tarp, stove, grill, pan, tool box, cordage, saw and hatchet. I had plenty of firewood that I previously cut earlier that year to stay warm. I spent t...

In this video I discuss the type of clothing to stay warm in extreme cold weather and the pros and cons of materials such wool or synthetic products. I first talk about the most part which is your base layer, then layering wool sweaters to trap warm air. Next is your outer shell which is your jacket and pants, they need to be water resistant, insulated and durable. I show the socks and boots I ...

Some old and new clips from my videos. Winter in Alberta can be severe and extremely cold, and these are only a handful of the adventures I've been on and captured on video. I actually downloaded these and many other clips for another video idea but changed my mind. Anyway I hope you enjoy!
Diamond Willow Furniture

I make an end table from some scrap wood and diamond willow I harvested. I've never really made an furniture before or worked with diamond willow so this project was a bit challenging.
Scavenging For Free Firewood
Переглядів 24214 днів тому
I use my hauling cart to go scavenging. Just down the street are two construction sites which I have permission to pick from. There is a ton of good leftover materials being thrown away that will end up in a landfill. The reason I don't drive over there is because there are hundreds of nails scattered around that could give me a flat tire. My main goal is to collect as much scrap wood as possib...

Thanks Mike! I appreciate you taking the time to watch
Hey, Ken - I can see you've got a lot of work in those and you've done a very good job. I'd love to be able to try something like that. Another channel I like to watch that's called "The Wild Yam," (Jen.) she used basic around-the-house stuff to make up a forge, and then fashioned a pretty darn nice bushcraft type knife from a railroad spike. I'm sure you've heard of people doing this before. Take care...
Thanks Dave. All my Blacksmith stuff is homemade too. The forge is an old brake drum. I made a knife from a file before along with a froe, drawkinife and many other things. I have a Blacksmith Playlist on my channel. It's quite fun. Take care my friend 🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@Thelonelyscavenger I go and have a look at your other blacksmithing projects. I'll bet the file knife & froe came out good. Do you still use the froe for splitting, etc wood?
@@davestelling I never used the froe as much as I figured.
You have a very artistic talent Ken . Berries are so good and versatile, pies , jams , even wine. My uncle had mason jars of it in the basement. Ate rhubarb pies my aunt made.
Thanks for sharing that William. We usually make raspberry and rhubarb crisp or freezer jam. Stewed rhubarb on toast or ice cream is good too. Thank you for the compliment as well
Artist challenge....perhaps you could do the misty mountain and a hobbit house tucked away in that garden?🎉
I really like that idea and will think about it
@@Thelonelyscavenger would make my summer ☀️
Yikes! Thanks for sharing brother
Thankfully winter is not always like that! Thanks for watching Mark
Took me three tries to find a spot the rhubarb was happy with. Got feral raspberries in one corner of the yard. Spread like mad and you have to run the lawnmower through them every couple of years. The birds and the bees get most of the raspberries. Thank you for sharing your garden with us Ken. Stay safe and stay cool
Thanks for sharing that Sean. Out of my 15 total rhubarb plants I have one runt in the litter. So far the birds and bees have never touched the raspberries
It took me 3 seasons to learn not to prune my raspberry plants. They were really spindly and I wanted them to thicken up, but pruning them prevented the fruit from growing (they grow on shoots from last year's stems). So last year I didn't prune them, and this year I have tons of beautiful, delicious raspberries. Those plants will get big, though, Ken. They'll take over that whole corner of your yard. Or maybe the Canadian varieties are different. I live in Virginia.
I have added trellis to raspberry growing and added a Lil soil around it all...made 2x growth in 2 weeks
Thanks for sharing that Jeremy! I have another rhubarb and raspberry patch that I've been growing for about 10 years but it's technically not on my property
Every time I go to my back woods place I start eating berries like 3 days before. Then when I poo I do a shallow cat hole, in a sunny spot . My spot is a few miles back and the walk is lined with patches.
Yes I remember you mentioning this in one of my cabin videos. 👍
That's awesome brother! Thanks for the video
Thanks Mark! I really appreciate you watching
